Myofunctional Therapy: Part 2

This week, we will be focusing on the progression of dentofacial growth problems and recognizing the correct tongue position and muscles that myofunctional therapy targets to correct these concerns.

The development of craniofacial growth problems can start with a number of causes, including the following:

  • Lack of muscle usage/compensation due to difficulties with breastfeeding
  • Processed or soft foods
  • Tongue/lip-tie
  • Poor oral habits such as thumb sucking
  • Bottle-feeding and/or pacifier use

Then, structural and functional changes result from the following:

  • Incorrect chewing
  • Improper swallowing
  • Narrow or collapsed palate
  • Low tongue rest
  • Lack of lip seal

So, what does a proper tongue position look like?

A proper tongue position helps grow and maintain the proper jaw size, stays clear from the airway to prevent blockage, and rests against the roof of the mouth.

To promote proper tongue position, myofunctional therapy targets the following:

  • Muscles of mastication
  • Neck muscles
  • Tongue muscles
  • Pharyngeal muscles

Check out what patients are saying about their experience with myofunctional therapy!

“I am certain [myofunctional therapy] has helped to provide higher quality sleep, greater breathing capacity in my meditations and workouts, daily awareness of nose breathing over mouth breathing, and most of all – freedom from my CPAP machine! – Thanks to LeighAnn.”
– M.B.

“I have never truly dreamed before, or I just don’t remember the last time I’ve dreamed. Not only did this program help improve the quality of my sleep, but I now have begun to dream and actually remember them. Thanks to Gisselle!”
– P.R.
