Myofunctional Therapy: Part 1

Join us as we explore myofunctional therapy with the MyoCorrect program over the next several weeks!
We’re excited to offer this deep dive.

What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a program used to correct the improper function of the tongue and facial muscles. It involves strengthening the tongue and orofacial muscles by teaching individuals how to engage the muscles in the appropriate position.

What are the signs of Myofunctional Dysfunction?

  • Low resting tongue
  • Frenulums
  • Narrow Palate
  • Weak lip seal
  • Crooked teeth
  • Atypical Swallowing
  • Incorrect breathing
  • Improper chewing
  • Malocclusion

Myofunctional Therapy . . .

    • should not be introduced as an option;
    • can be used as a preventative measure;
    • can be used as the sole treatment (a patient does not have to be using an appliance);
    • can be used with other dental devices (including clear aligners); and
    • includes more than just exercises (includes the awareness method, education, breathing awareness, and mental health approach, and creates increased compliance with appliances and aligners).

What is the goal of oral myofunctional therapy?

The primary goal of orofacial myofunctional therapy is to achieve an ideal resting posture, which includes a stable relationship between the tongue, lips, teeth, and jaws.
