It Starts with Screening Your Patients
What is the purpose of screening patients in-office?
The purpose of screening all existing and new patients for underdeveloped mandible and maxilla, diminished airway, and resulting conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is to ensure that patients who are struggling with these issues receive the help that they need.
Many patients may not be aware of the seriousness of these conditions and how their overall health is being impacted. Patients may have one symptom or they may have many of them. They may not know that help is available.
Another Reminder:
The ADA lists several roles dentists should play in screening. This list includes the following duties:
- Assessment of patient risk for sleep-breathing disorders as part of a comprehensive medical and dental history
- Referral of affected patients to appropriate physicians
- Evaluation of the use of oral appliance therapy and providing it for mild and moderate OSA when CPAP fails
- Identification and addressing of the side effects of oral appliance therapy
- Communication of patients’ treatment progress with referring physicians and other healthcare providers
Questions to think about:
- Where are our screening forms?
- What should we be saying in hygiene to review these forms with the patient?
- Is everyone being screened daily in our office? Are we consistent in our execution?
